Seahawks Select Devon Witherspoon With No. 5 Overall Pick
Seattle Prioritizes Toughness in Round 1
Seahawks Earn A Grades for Day 1 of 2023 NFL Draft
Sticking to the script that provided immense success last April, the Seattle Seahawks prioritized picking the best players available in Round 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft. With the No. 5 overall pick, the Seahawks selected Illinois Fighting Illini cornerback Devon Witherspoon.
Witherspoon is a 6'1", 185-pound cornerback who is known for his physicality and ball skills. He had 11 interceptions in his three seasons at Illinois, including six in 2022. He also had 23 pass breakups and 112 tackles over that span.
The Seahawks were one of the NFL's biggest surprises in 2022, going 9-8 and making the playoffs after being picked by many to finish last in the NFC West. They did so by building a tough, physical defense that led the league in takeaways.
Witherspoon is a perfect fit for that defense. He is a physical cornerback who can play man-to-man coverage and is not afraid to come up and tackle. He is also a ball hawk who can make interceptions.
The Seahawks also added to their defense in the second round, selecting Texas A&M defensive lineman Shemar Stewart with the No. 40 overall pick. Stewart is a 6'3", 298-pound defensive tackle who had 10.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks in 2022.
With the additions of Witherspoon and Stewart, the Seahawks' defense is even more formidable. They now have a young, talented group of players who are eager to prove themselves.
