Chelsea Handed Aston Villa A 6 1 Thrashing To Leave Them Rooted To The Bottom Of The Womens Super League

Chelsea handed Aston Villa a 6-1 thrashing to leave them rooted to the bottom of the Women's Super League

Chelsea came from behind after an Alisha Lehmann strike to secure their third consecutive win in the Women's Super League on Sunday, November 13. Goals from Sophie Ingle, Guro Reiten, Lauren James, Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Jelena Cankovic and Niamh Charles secured a comfortable 6-1 win over Aston Villa.

The win takes Chelsea to second in the standings, two points behind Arsenal and a point ahead of Manchester United, while Aston Villa are rooted to the bottom of the table without a win.

Aston Villa had taken a shock lead through Alisha Lehmann after just 10 minutes, but Chelsea looked the dominant side and it was no surprise when Sophie Ingle equalised in the 22nd minute. From that moment on, it was all Chelsea as they dominated possession and created waves of attacks on the Aston Villa goal.

Guro Reiten made it 2-1 in the 35th minute with a well-taken finish from the edge of the box, before Lauren James extended the lead to 3-1 just before half-time. The second half was more of the same as Chelsea continued to create chances, with Johanna Rytting Kaneryd making it 4-1 in the 53rd minute. Jelena Cankovic added a fifth in the 73rd minute before Niamh Charles completed the scoring in the 89th minute.

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes was pleased with the win, saying: "We showed great character to come from behind and win the game. Aston Villa made it tough for us, but we kept our patience and eventually we got our goals."

Aston Villa manager Carla Ward admitted her side were second best, saying: "We were outplayed by a better team on the day. We need to learn from this and improve as a team."

Chelsea will be looking to extend their winning run when they face Manchester United at home next Sunday, November 20. Aston Villa, meanwhile, will be looking to get their first win of the season when they travel to Everton on Saturday, November 19.

## Conclusion Chelsea's win over Aston Villa was a comprehensive performance from the Blues, who showed their quality in attack and defence. The win takes Chelsea to second in the standings, just two points behind leaders Arsenal, and will give them confidence ahead of their clash with Manchester United next Sunday. Aston Villa, meanwhile, will be hoping to get their first win of the season when they travel to Everton on Saturday.
